The Different Teeth Alignment Configurations of Bevel Gears

January 06, 2021

Compared with other popular gears, bevel gears are uniquely designed to transmit energy between intersecting axes. Perpendicular alignments are the most common design but they can also be created for virtually any angle, making it possible to change the operating angle. Their teeth bearing surface, or surface pitch, is conically tapered or shaped.

By varying the number of teeth or diameter on each wheel, the mechanical advantage can also be changed.

The ratio of teeth between the drive and driven wheels can either be decreased or increased. As such, the rotational drive and torque of the succeeding wheel can be altered in relation to the first wheel. So, if the speed rises, the torque diminishes and vice versa. The teeth alignment can be configured in four ways as explained below.

Spiral: this configuration is identical to helical gears with angled teeth.

Straight: gears with this alignment are similar to spur gears but have their teeth narrowing towards the apex and can be so noisy because of the abrupt contact between meshing teeth.

Hypoid: these gears are similar to spiral gears but differ in that their mating gears do not have intersecting axes, which allows for smoother engagement and larger pinion.

Crown: as the name implies, the teeth of this gear resemble the points on a crown that have pitch angles of 90 degrees and parallel with the axis.

Bevel gears have a diverse application in various industries, including locomotives, automobiles, marine applications, cooling towers, steel and power plants, printing press, and many more.
