As a result, it requires special and strong thrust bearings, especially for gears that take on higher loads.

 

Generates Substantial Heat

Axial thrust generates heat that damages gears without proper lubrication and design. As a result, helical gears have relatively low efficiency, unless a proper lubrication system is in place. 

 

Requires More Specialization 

A spur gear's simple design makes it easy, quick, and affordable to manufacture. On the other hand, helical gears are a bit more complicated to produce due to the angular nature of their teeth, which requires specialized tools and in turn, costs more to manufacture.
