Understanding Helical Gears
Gears are a crucial part of many mechanical innovations, but contrary to popular belief, there are many different types of gear, created for many specific functions. Helical gears are one such type that are most notably used when noise is a consideration, as they are much quieter than their spur gear counterparts. When you need these quiet, but effective components, contact True Gear & Spline, and we will gladly manufacture them for you.
Helical gears are cylindrical gears with slanted teeth. The teeth afford these gears a larger contact ratio compared to spur gears, and also makes them noticeably quieter than other types. This trait is the reason that these gears are used in almost all car transmissions; they are also used in fertilizer industries, printing firms, power industries, and oil industries, and many more besides! They are not without their disadvantages – they will typically be supported with thrust bearings, for instance – but they are still extremely helpful when used correctly.
There are two types of helical gears:
Crossed helical gears are used to transmit power between non-intersecting and non-parallel axes. A pair of these gears must have a normal pitch and identical pressure angles. These traits make them excellent for a wide variety of speed ratios, but they are not recommended for heavy loads. Typically, these gears are constructed from stainless steel, cast aluminum, nylon, or bronze.
Double helical gears are designed with two sets of teeth set in a V shape. These gears are built with longer teeth, which allows them to have a greater surface contact area and makes them exceptionally strong – ideal for heavy machineries and high volume loads.
